This spotlight is part of a special series dedicated to the four new graduating cohorts of the Class of 2025 — the Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Governance, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy, and the Master of Public Affairs — each of which reflects the mission of the American University of Armenia (AUA) to cultivate excellence, impact, and innovation across diverse fields.
The Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy (MAIRD) program at the American University of Armenia (AUA) is designed for ambitious, globally minded individuals seeking to understand and shape the international landscape. This year, the University proudly celebrated the graduation of MAIRD’s inaugural cohort — an exceptional group of students who brought intellectual curiosity, cultural awareness, and a deep commitment to public service into every aspect of their academic journey.
MAIRD is a 1.5-year interdisciplinary program that equips students with the conceptual frameworks, analytical tools, and problem-solving skills necessary to address the most pressing challenges in regional and global politics. Through coursework rooted in both theory and practice, students critically examine evolving dimensions of diplomacy and international governance while gaining advanced knowledge in key regional areas such as the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Russia.
Throughout their academic journey, MAIRD students learned from a distinguished group of scholars, renowned diplomats, and policy practitioners who brought real-world experience into the classroom. They explored diverse theoretical approaches to international relations, gained firsthand insights into the operations of international and regional institutions, and acquired practical skills essential for managing the intricate realities of diplomacy, conflict resolution, and global governance.
As part of the program’s mandatory component, the students gained hands-on experience across a diverse range of public and private institutions. Internship placements included the Armenian Research Institute, European University of Armenia, the Cyprus Consulate in Armenia, and others. These placements allowed them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, develop professional skills, and build meaningful connections within their fields of interest.
“Our first cohort of MAIRD graduates have grown immeasurably throughout the 1.5 years working together,” remarked MAIRD Interim Program Chair Dr. Uroš Prokić, adding, “Big systems thinking lies at the heart of this program and the critical thinking skills our students have acquired equips them for the demanding challenges that lie ahead in the international sphere.”
Beyond the classroom, this cohort formed a strong, collaborative community. The bonds they forged through shared challenges, heated debates, and countless hours of learning and collaboration will undoubtedly extend into their professional lives. As they move into careers across the diplomatic, governmental, NGO, and academic sectors, they carry with them not only the knowledge and skills gained during the program but also a lasting network of peers and mentors.
